5.15 on Saturday 26th July, the Facing Your Limits kayakers paddled into Denver Sluices to complete the last of the challenges in the ’3 charities, 3 challenges, 2 survivors, one year’ pledge. Having been sent on their way from Great Barford three days earlier by Mo, Brett, Tim Hewett and an ITV reporter, the team of 10 women quickly settled into their 3 mph pace. Navigating locks as a team and ensuring that all stayed fed and hydrated as the hot summer sun decided to make an appearance. The first day was going well until 1.5 miles from camp, the team were stopped by the Police who

had closed the river. Tragically, a young boy had drowned and his body could not be found. The last part of the journey for the day, was completed with the kayaks strapped precariously in the back of the hire van. Day 2 was another early start and the route was beautiful but hard, with the physical demands of keeping paddling pace weighing heavy on the team. The strong head wind and unbelievable amounts of weed, which blocked all motorboats from navigating the river, made the end section of the day extremely tiring. With the knowledge that day 3 would take us to our destination, the team paddled with focus, passing Ely and the Ten Mile Bank, out into the widening and seemingly never-ending straight sections of

the Great River Ouse. A few pounds donated by onlookers, and claps and cheers from moored boats spurred us on until the relief, disbelief and awe of seeing the Denver Sluices and our fantastic support team and Mo, with the moving finish line, ahead. The end of the trip was emotional, with reflection and thanks, toasts and laughter and the song filled mini bus journey home. Without the support of some fantastic people, the donations from such generous supporters and the unquestioning faith we all have in Facing Your Limits as a worthy campaign, these three challenges and the money they have raised would not have been possible. And to Donna and Ali – there really is no ‘i’ in DAS! Thanks for so many fantastic miles.

Please keep the donations coming in and watch this space for the next update from FYL.

Many thanks to Stuart Wing for these images.

managed locks, bushes, trees, fishing lines and other flotsam and jetsam, some more capsize drills and then back to Priory for final planning. What an inspiring sight it was, to see the team negotiate the river together and for Jess to negotiate some trees, shrubs and bushes! Your paddle is very interesting Jess, but I don’t really want to see it that close again thanks!

Morale was high and everyone settled into a reasonable pace, trying hard not to let the realisation that this really is going to be another limit to be faced! By day 3, if you come to support us and we paddle past without waving, it will probably be because we cannot raise our arms above our heads!

Still so much to organise, but the excitement is building and I cannot help but think back to the physical, psychological and emotional highs and lows we experienced during our other 2 challenges. My fear now, is that I am hooked on facing and conquering

imageSo…… A restless nights sleep, filled with anxiety dreams of not hearing alarms, missing publicity opportunities and bicycles breaking down turned to the misty light of dawn. We were in the saddle by 6.45 and straight into hill land and the misty chill away from Tongue – what a beautiful place to stay. For the last day of our trip, Scotland seemed to be throwing everything it had at us; a strong head wind, long steep hill after hill, low cloud obscuring the view and the tantalising knowledge of being 67 miles for our goal. So we kept our heads down and pushed our legs to their lactic acid limit. The welcome at John o was fantastic, with Mo ruining her now well trained choral voice, peter and louise exhausted but still able to hold the Nike finish line tape straight and the three of us managing to cycle in to the car park rather than down to the sign! The message on the sign was changed for the FYL chant, and the overwhelming emotion of realising the dream was archived in every angle of photograph. Then, no sooner had we finished, the bikes were dismantled and the van packed. A three way split of team to make our merry, story filled and foggy way back to the lovely city of Inverness, baths, comfort and a well needed sleep.
And now to the final challenge.

A very wise person once said, ‘be defined by what you give and not by what you receive’. I would like if i may, to contradict that for just a moment. I have been given the gift of life, a beautiful gift that for some is short lived , altered dramatically or is, at best, unhappy and challenging. I accept that gift with open arms and receive the opportunity to pursue a lifelong aspiration of challenge in the most simple physical sense. I embrace the moment to indulge my embodied self in a journey of life changing experiences and in return will gift the pledges of monetary reward to those for whom receiving is also to be cherished.

Team DASh are now ready to start the next Facing Your Limits challenge, the 1300 mile cycle ride from Lands End to John O’Groats. cheap Lasix FYL 7 Pic by Mo Lea Buy Orlistat

buy Cialis online buy Tadalafil treatment of depression On the 22nd June, the Facing Your Limits team and friends completed their 40 mile walk from Bedford to Addenbrookes.  An amazing experience, the memories of which will stay with me for many years, not least because of the realisation of the capacity of the human body to repeat such an simple action of placing one foot in front of the other.  A simple action which we take for granted, when others are unable to.  Although I witnessed first hand, the pain of some of the walkers by the end of the walk and personally some muscle tightness in my calf muscles, it was worth the challenge if it results in raising as much money as possible to support those fantastic charities who help others to achieve the things we take for granted in our every day lives.

And now the next challenge is on the horizon.  The route for our cycle ride from Lands End to John O’Groats will push us to new limits, mentally, physically and emotionally, but I cannot wait to get started and find out how I will cope with facing my limits in order to help others conquer theirs.
